The Heritage Centre, 32 Upper Brook Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8DG
Winchester’s Conservation Area, designated in 1969 and later extended to include Hyde and St Cross, was one of the first in the country. In the last few years, resources to protect it have declined, and today the Conservation Area is listed as “at risk” on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, and its condition is described as “deteriorating.”
Winchester City Council’s Historic Environment team has devised a pilot project, which is testing a survey methodology for possible extension to other districts. The project is called Winchester Future 50 and the idea is to utilise the wealth of knowledge and experience within the community to gather essential information within two areas within the Conservation Area.
City of Winchester Trust volunteers have worked with the City Council’s project team to carry out visual surveys and take photographs of significant sites, buildings and landmarks in the two pilot areas. The exhibition showcases the work that has been done, and provides an excellent overview of the many important and significant buildings in the Conservation Area.
