Worthy Lane car park, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7AB
Frequent free vintage bus service all afternoon, and a display of the Friends of King Alfred Buses collection of Bedford coaches. The coaches will be on static display until around 3pm when they will run some free trips.
This is a rare opportunity to see and travel on some of Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB)) collection of historic vehicles completely free of charge, including a newly-restored and very rare Bedford CALZ minicoach dating from 1965.
Friends of King Alfred Buses is a registered charity dedicated to the preservation of buses and coaches formerly operated by R Chisnell & Sons Ltd t/a King Alfred Motor Services, who were the main provider of public road passenger transport in Winchester from 1920 until 1972. The vehicles are restored and operated almost entirely by volunteer FoKAB members and the collection now consists of 18 vehicles dating from 1931 to 1970, some of which have had to be rescued and repatriated from far away as the USA!
Around 14 vehicles are generally usable at any time, and on this occasion the opportunity will be available to see and travel entirely free of charge on a 1931 Dennis bus, a 1967 Leyland Atlantean open top double decker and three Bedford coaches dating from 1961 and 1965. Each vehicle is now unique in one way or another and this is an excellent opportunity to sample bus and coach travel as it used to be and how the vehicles developed from the 1930s to the mid-1960s.
