Mid Hampshire Railway, Station House, Station Hill, Ropley, Alresford, Hampshire, SO24 0BL
Come & explore behind the scenes of 'The Watercress Line' at our Ropley engineering hub, and discover what is involved in renovating and maintaining a steam locomotive.
The tours will take you behind the scenes through our workshops to explore how we restore the steam locomotives and carriages we run on the Watercress Line, as well as discovering what is involved in maintaining them.
Not only will you be able to get up close to these magnificent engines, but after or before the tour you can also visit our ‘Women on the Railway’ exhibition in the viewing gallery at Ropley. This exhibition has been curated especially for Heritage Open Days 2018. For those who are interested in learning more about the extraordinary women in Hampshire, on the first evening of the festival our very own Dr Becky Peacock will be also presenting a talk in the centre of Winchester on the roles of women on the railways from 1850 till the end of 1945. See separate entry for more details.
Please note that whilst tours and entry to the exhibition at Ropley is free, to travel on the train a ticket must be purchased.
We will be running a two-train service on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September. Normal fees apply for travelling on the train.
