Find out about the history, evolution & soaring success of English wines as Winchester City Museum host sparkling wine specialists Hattingley Valley. Following the talk there will be a tasting of Hattingley Valley’s award winning sparkling wines.
Established by Simon Robinson in 2008 Hattingley Valley is a family owned business located in Hampshire specialising in premium English sparkling wines using the traditional method.
The Robinsons planted the first vineyard with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier in 2008. Alongside Emma Rice, UK Winemaker of the Year 2014 and 2016, they planned the modern, eco-friendly winery in Lower Wield that was completed in 2010. It uses the latest technology and equipment from continental Europe, has sophisticated waste disposal facilities and was the first UK winery to adopt solar power.
Hattingley Valley use the traditional method for making our wines. A key element of their style is the subtle use of oak barrels to ferment a small proportion of the wines each year, as well as ageing on lees in stainless steel tanks. This helps to soften the wines before they go into bottles for the second fermentation. Since launching its first release in August 2013, Hattingley Valley has been recognised in competitions across the globe & developed into one of the most respected producers of English sparkling wines. Hattingley was awarded the ‘World Champion’ trophy for its 2011 Blanc de Blancs in the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships 2017. This makes Hattingley Valley the first English producer to be awarded two trophies by this competition.
