Ride on vintage buses & coaches dating from 1931 to 1971 & explore the local area via a variety of historic city and country bus routes.
Free bus services organised by Friends of King Alfred Buses featuring vintage vehicles dating from 1931 to 1971 will operate a variety of city and country routes, departing Winchester Broadway from approximately 13:00 until 21:00. There will also be a display of vintage buses/coaches during the afternoon at the Cattle Market car park, Worthy Lane.
R. Chisnell & Sons Ltd (trading as King Alfred Motor Services) was the major bus and coach operator in Winchester from 1920 until 1973 when the company’s road transport operations passed to the National Bus Company (Hants & Dorset). Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) was set up in 1985 to preserve the vehicles, artefacts and memory of this company and has no less than 14 original King Alfred vehicles in its care. It is now a registered heritage charity.
Of the 14 vehicles which date from 1931 to 1971, 13 are currently in roadworthy condition and are to be seen from time to time at vintage vehicle rallies, running days and similar events. The 14th vehicle is actively under restoration and may appear for the first time at this event, where FoKAB will join forces with other vehicle preservationists to give a rare opportunity to travel on a range of historic vehicles operating over their traditional routes. So far as is known, all surviving King Alfred vehicles have now found a safe, long-term home with FoKAB which seeks to make them available to the public whenever suitable opportunities exist.
● Saturday 15 September: 1300-2100
No booking required.
There are no pre-bookings. Simply turn up and travel, subject to capacity of the buses. Every effort is made to provide enough vehicles so that no-one will be disappointed although as with any bus service it is ‘first come, first served’. Passengers under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.
The event consists of an assortment of return bus trips based on Winchester Broadway. A short trip on one vehicle could be completed in less than an hour, but visitors wishing to sample a wider range of vehicles and routes would need to allow rather longer! Normal parking and toilet facilities are available in or near the event locations at the Cattle Market car park and the Broadway. Due to the historic nature of the vehicles generally they do not feature wheelchair access, and whilst there is limited space on the buses for buggies, pushchairs etc they must be folded.
