An opportunity to tour St Swithun’s School, learn about its exceptional women from the last 135 years and view exhibits from the school’s celebration her story: 100 years since the emancipation of women. PRE-BOOKING ESSENTIAL

In 1883 Anna Bramston, daughter of the then Dean of Winchester, launched an initiative to establish a school providing a “sound and thorough” education for local girls. On 5 May 1884, following a fundraising campaign supported by the cathedral, Winchester college, local professionals and trades, Winchester High School opened its doors to 17 pupils.

Through a number of evolutions and having played its role in the Second World War, St Swithun’s School today is a flourishing independent school educating girls aged from 3-18. Set in 45 acres of grounds on Magdalen Hill to the east of the city centre, it offers excellent and forward-thinking teaching practice, sporting and recreational facilities and is supported by a thriving community the friends of St Swithun’s.

Heritage Open Day is a unique opportunity to explore the history of the school and to learn about its own exceptional women. St Swithun’s is offering a guided tour of its historic and modern facilities and grounds, as well as the chance to view some of the activities and materials from a year-long project, commemorating female emancipation.

Booking Details:
Visitors must pre-book, and will be required to include the names and ages of all visitors in the party and an e-mail address for confirmation and any last minute changes. Parking is available on site only if pre-booked, in which case, visitors should supply the make, colour and registration number of the vehicle.

Additional Information:
The tour takes approximately one hour and includes a number of staircases.

St Swithun’s School is situated on the B3404 Alresford Road, approximately one mile east of Winchester city centre. Parking is available for pre-booked tour visitors only, who have provided make, colour and registration number of their vehicle.
