Winchester Lido

Winchester Lido Sports Association, Hyde Church Lane, off Worthy Lane, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 7DZ

History displays, building tours, & free badminton on offer all day! Come & visit our much-loved community venue, celebrate the 70th anniversary of our local swimming club (which was “born” at the Lido in 1948), & take part in “sporting memories”.

The Lido was designed & built in the early 1930s by Charles Schwerdt, J.P. – a prominent local businessman, landowner, magistrate, & prospective Parliamentary candidate – as a gift to the community.

The complex was designed as a Club House & Swimming Pool, providing the citizens of Winchester with facilities that, at the time, were probably "the best equipped in England".

The opening ceremony of the "Winchester Lido and Sports Club" took place in the summer of 1934, with the Mayor of Winchester presiding. During the war, the Lido was used by the military, & was handed back to the City in 1945 when it became a Dance Hall & later a Bingo Hall. in 1968 it was re-leased from the City by the newly-formed Winchester Indoor Sports Association, with the swimming pool retained (and subsequently demolished) by the City Council. Today, the Winchester Lido Sports Association is a registered charity, which maintains and manages the facility on behalf of the community.

On 15th September, we will have demonstrations & 'have a go' sessions for many of the activities that our heritage sports facility normally offers – e.g. badminton, martial arts. We will be offering tours of the building, and will have a gallery on display documenting the history of the Lido. There will also be a display to commemorate 70 years of Winchester City Penguins Swimming Club, established at the Lido in 1948, and a range of activities run by the Sporting Memories Network. Refreshments will be on sale, too.
