The Great Hall, The Castle, Castle Avenue, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8UJ
The Great Hall is delighted to welcome visitors for Heritage Open Days to discover the fascinating history of this former castle site & law court. The finest surviving medieval aisled hall of the 13th century, it once formed part of the magnificent Winchester castle which was founded in 1067 by William the Conqueror shortly after his victory at the Battle of Hastings. In 1222 Henry III, with his love of architecture, began the construction of one of the earliest Gothic styled medieval halls.
Dominating the Great Hall is the iconic Round Table, famously linked to the ancient legends of King Arthur and his Knights. Uncover its unique role and the influence it had on kings throughout history. From historians to poets, its mystique has captivated people’s imaginations for centuries.
Want to discover more, then why not join us for special historical tours exploring the fascinating stories of The Great Hall, Winchester Castle and the trials and tribulations of the Great Hall as a law court. Visitors will join one of our enthusiastic tour guides with special access to The Council Chamber building and Former Grand Jury room not usually open to the public. Find out about the fascinating history of Winchester Castle and some colourful characters of the Great Hall's past- from Kings and Queens to judge's and prisoners.
The Great Hall is open for FREE between 10:00 and 16:30 on all the dates listed below. You can just turn up. However for the tours please book a place!
● Thursday 19 September: Tours 1100 and 1500.
● Friday 20 September: Tours 1100 and 1500.
● Saturday 21 September: Tour at 1100 .
● Sunday 22 September: Tour at 1030.
Places are limited on our historical tours so please book a place in advance to avoid disappointment. Booking opens 7th August for general public and in mid July for those on our supporters mailing list. Anyone can become a supporter, and it is FREE to subscribe.
The Great Hall and Queen Eleanor's Garden is fully wheelchair accessible. The Long Gallery and Gift shop can be accessed via a lift with the assistance of a Great Hall custodian. The Former Grand Jury room is not wheelchair accessible.

Allow up to 1hour for tour, and longer if you are combining your visit with one of the other HODs events taking place at The Great Hall The Great Hall is hosting a number of events as part of this year's Heritage Open Days, including a specially curated exhibition, activities for children and musical performances.
