Panel discussion: “Women and Law: Changing Attitudes”

The Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 8SB

Eminent panellists, chaired by Dana Denis-Smith, founder of Obelisk Support, come together to discuss the past 100 years of women in law.

HHJ Susan Evans QC will talk about challenges faced by women working in the traditionally male-dominated legal professions, seeking eventually to become QCs and Judges; have attitudes changed, how easy is it for barristers and solicitors to juggle work and home and is the glass ceiling lifting so that women can have a strong and equal future at all levels in law?

The Chief Crown Prosecutor of Wessex, Jo Jakymec, has been responsible for the prosecution of serious, organised crime for many years. She joins the panel in her role as Head of the CPS and member of the Local Criminal Justice Board. She will deal with issues facing women achieving a senior level in prosecuting, dealing, for instance, with disclosure, advocacy and successful resolution of the most serious cases such as murder, complex fraud and rape.

Lady Edwina Grosvenor is an English philanthropist and prison reformer. She will speak about charities: The Clink, a network of restaurants in prisons employing inmates; One Small Thing, a charity that seeks to raise awareness of how compassion and respect can prevent women from re-offending, and The Centre for Mental Health, which runs mental health workshops in women's prisons.

As part of '100 Years of Women in Law' series (we have three events this September in Winchester) , join a Circuit Judge, a Prison philanthropist & the Chief Crown Prosecutor of Wessex as they explore the difficulties faced & progress made since the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919.
