Long Barn, The Old Sheep Fair, Bishops Sutton Road, Alresford, Hampshire, SO24 9EJ
Andrew Bentley is a Winchester based freelance gardener. Here at Long Barn he talks about his project to design and install a Physic herb garden in the grade 2 walled garden at Chawton House near Alton.
He was inspired by a book published in two volumes between 1737 - 1739 which set out to describe the medicinal uses of 500 plants growing in Chelsea Physic Garden. The main part of his talk is about this book and the author’s life story; a fascinating account of triumph over adversity.
Andrew chose to use 40 of the plants in his design, and he talks about some of his choices in more depth, particularly his most favourite plant which he was delighted to find in the book!
The installation of the garden proved challenging with the additional pressure of a deadline to open to the public and Andrew discusses the issues he faced and the progress of the work.
The garden is 3 years old this year and has proven popular with visitors to Chawton House. After listening to the story of how it came to be, Andrew hopes you will be inspired to go and see it for yourselves or maybe buy some herbs here at Long Barn!
Andrew is delighted his talk in taking place at the Long Barn, surrounded by fragrant lavender. Long Barn is situated on a site, which, since the Middle Ages, was used to pen herds of sheep for the Alresford Sheep Fair, hence ‘The Old Sheep Fair’ address. Lavender now grows where once as many as 16,000 sheep huddled!
Talk - Saturday 14 September: 1500-1600
Please note this talk will be taking place in an upstairs room at Long Barn, there is no level access.
