Meet outside the Westgate Museum, High Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 9AP
Winchester is a city with nearly 2000 years of history. On this fascinating tour we shall walk the city to find its medieval past in the surviving street plans, ecclesiastical buildings and architecture. Along the way we shall explore some of the people we know who lived in these streets or worshipped in the churches by name and profession.
The tour will commence at the top of the High Street and finish in the cloister of the medieval Priory of St Swithun (Winchester Cathedral) – the centre of both the city and the diocese of Winchester.
This tour will be led by Dr Cindy Wood of the University of Winchester – a medieval historian of the medieval period with an interest in the physical culture of the period. Dr Wood has very kindly agreed to run two tours, both the same, so you will not miss out if you are also hoping to attend some of the many other events taking place on Friday.
Friday 20 September: Two tours - 10:30 and 14:00
This walking tour will be exploring the centre of Winchester, there are narrow footpaths, cobbled areas, uneven surfaces and could be muddy paths so please wear appropriate footwear. Allow at least 90minutes. There are toilets and parking in the centre of Winchester.
