On the 8th September 1824 the first bridge from Langstone to the island was opened. Almost immediately Hayling Island changed forever.
On the afternoon of the bicentennial, exactly 200 years after that first link stopped muddy feet across the Wadeway or cadging a lift in a boat with a fisherman heading north, Hayling Island Community Centre will be the host for the telling of the tale of why the Bridge came about, the reasons for the Act of Parliament necessary for its construction, how it was built and eventually the replacement that you drive, bus or walk over whenever you depart or return to our island home.

Hayling Island Community Centre is on the 30 Bus route from Havant. Alight at the Barley Mow. The Community Centre is in the park to the left behind Station Road. Enter the building up the slope on the left after the car park.
Catch the 31 bus back to Hayling or jump back onto the 30 for a scenic tour of the island before returning whence you started.
