Hyde900 The fall of a monastic city: Winchester’s medieval monasteries and their Reformation fate.

  • St Bartholomew's Church King Alfred Place Winchester, England, SO23 7DF United Kingdom (map)

How did a monastic community, of the magnitude of Winchester’s, succumb to the reformations of the Tudors? Drawing on recent research, James Clark will reconsider what can be known of Winchester’s reformation transformation.

Medieval Winchester was a monastic city. In fact, few of England’s provincial cities and towns gave monasteries and friaries such a commanding presence. Their churches, cults and customs represented the sweep of England’s religious history from the first beginnings of the Benedictine tradition at the cathedral priory, Hyde and St Mary’s, to the popular, public religion of the four, main orders of friars. Such a presence and physical profile succumbed to the reformations of Henry VIII, his son and daughters only slowly. The pace and pattern of change are not so easily traced as earlier and later periods of the city’s history. Drawing on fresh research in the records of royal and civic government as well as the insights from recent archaeological surveys, this talk reconsiders what can be known of Winchester’s reformation transformation.
