Behind the Business: P&G Wells Bookshop

  • P&G Wells Bookshop 11 College Street Winchester, SO23 9LZ (map)

Tucked behind the Cathedral Close on College Street in one of the most historic parts of Winchester, P&G Wells is the oldest shop in the city and possibly the longest-surviving bookshop in the country.

In this short but fascinating film by Adrienne Photography, we talk to the current manager, Steve Scholey, about the history of this bookselling, binding and printing business which stretches back for nearly 300 years. We also learn about some well-known poets and novelists who may have walked through its doors.

We even get to visit The Winchester Bindery which is a separate business at the back of the bookshop., and learn about the history of book binding from Tim Wiltshire.

Film available from 10 September - check back to watch

The films have been sponsored by Winchester BID. To find out more about the other businesses taking part in this series this year, please explore Behind the Business Films.
