A.E. Stallard and the Architecture of Havant

  • Old Town Hall, 56 East Street, Havant, Hampshire, PO9 1BS (map)

A.E. Stallard 1861-1953. A significant architect based for much of his career in Havant. This talk will discuss his work and that of other architects and builders in the vicinity.

Alfred Edward Stallard, Fellow of the Surveyors Institute.

Mr. Stallard designed and built the Elephant and Castle Horse Repository at 16-18 New Kent Road for the partnership of Inkpen & Stallard of Southsea. This was the largest horse auction house in Britain.

In December 1889 the partnership was dissolved and a few years later Stallard set up in Havant in an office on the corner of Potash Terrace, roughly where Halfords now stands, and started to design some significant and important buildings such as The White Hart and, with assistance, The War Memorial that really have acted as the key post-Georgian flavour of Havant town centre.

This illustrated talk, given by Jeremy Sayer, a Director of PEP Architects in South Street, will discuss this significant Havant man and discuss key features of his work which are still very visible in the townscape today.
